Himmler: “I thought you would say that. We
made a mistake, but we soon realized that the
Russian armed might was so great that it was only
a question of time when it would be turned against
us.”

In the course of this visit to Germany I
obtained fairly reliable evidence that Himmler had
been opposed throughout the war to an attack
on Sweden. His opponent in this had always been
Ribbentrop, who had favored such a course.

Even while we sat there talking about past
events and conditions, the fighting front for which
he was responsible—it was at no great distance
from us—was beginning to crack, just as Germany
was beginning to crack, and everyone knew that
the end was not far off.

Himmler returned to the subject of Sweden,
saying: “It is with the deepest gratitude and
admiration that we Germans recall Sweden’s
humanitarian acts during the first World War.
During this war we have not seen much evidence
of that sort, but we nevertheless have a certain
regard for Sweden. As an evidence of it I can
mention the fact that we did not bother to occupy
