which were so critical for our mission; in fact,
I do not believe that it would have been brought
to a successful conclusion but for his powerful
support. He told me later that Himmler had said
that the promise he had given me must not be
broken. Himmler himself later gave me an
account of what he had experienced during this
interval; he had had to overcome very strong
opposition to get the scheme carried through. He
added, sadly, that the order and efficiency
formerly displayed by his subordinates had gravely
deteriorated as a result of Germany’s precarious
military situation. And meanwhile the Allied
fronts were getting closer and closer to
Germany’s heart.

It became clear to me that I must return to
Berlin. On March 5th I flew to Berlin, where I
at once began negotiations with Schellenberg as
well as with his antagonist Kaltenbrunner. The
latter now came into the open as my opponent.

Kaltenbrunner: “I do not intend to assist you
in this matter you have brought up.”

Bernadotte: “And I am not going to stand one
of Himmler’s subordinates trying to sabotage an
