Copenhagen the Shell building had been bombed. It
was the headquarters of the Gestapo in Denmark,
and since they naturally expected an attack sooner
or later, they resorted to a typical measure to
prevent its being carried out: they placed a
number of Danish Fighters for Freedom in cells on
the top floor. The Allies had decided, however,
that the building must nevertheless be bombed.
When I arrived there was great excitement and
jubilation over the highly successful bombing
raid. The majority of the imprisoned Fighters for
Freedom had miraculously escaped death, while
the voluminous archives of the Gestapo had been
destroyed by fire. Unhappily, a number of
children in a school near the Shell building had lost
their lives.

My audience with King Christian deeply
affected me. I had learned enough to realize that he
was as important today to the Freedom
movement as he had ever been. To the Danish people
he was the focal point of their resistance, the
supreme head of the Freedom movement. Now,
sitting in his invalid chair—he had not yet
recovered from injuries resulting from a fall from
