Scandinavian prisoners at Neuengamme and able
to transmit them forthwith to the Danish and
Norwegian authorities and organizations
concerned.
I well remember the first hutments I inspected.
The commandant, who accompanied me
everywhere, made no objections when I wanted to
speak to the prisoners and even agreed to my
speaking with them in Swedish, though I thought
it wiser not to carry on long conversations in that
language, in order not to make him suspicious.
In this particular building were lodged the
Danish policemen who had been deported to
Germany when the German occupation authorities
in Denmark suppressed the regular police. Some
of these men had been at Neuengamme before,
after which they had been moved to other camps.
They had shown little enthusiasm when told they
were going back to this camp, where their
experiences had been the worst possible. And when I
looked around I could well understand their
feelings. The discipline was evidently barbarous and
the overcrowding appalling. In most of the huts
wooden pallets had been laid on the floor, and
