affairs. I told him that if it became necessary to
evacuate the camp, he must see that the Danes
and Norwegians were sent north, either to
northern Schleswig or to Denmark. The great
advantage gained by having them all assembled
in one camp near the Danish frontier must not be
lost. Obersturmbannführer Pauli promised to see
that my wish was carried out; whereupon I started
for Berlin and my second meeting with Himmler.
The meeting was on April 2nd. As before, I
visited Himmler at the Sanatorium of
Hohen-Lüchen, administered by Professor Gebhardt,
whose friendship with Himmler went back to
their school days. When the SS Chief entered the
room I noticed that he was not only somber, but
also nervous. During our talk, which went on for
four hours, he did not attempt to deny that he
regarded the situation as most critical, although he
would not admit that it was hopeless. It was during
this long conversation that my activities in
Germany were to be given a new direction. I suddenly
realized that I had been dragged into the vortex of
high politics.
