The next day we started removing all the
Scandinavians from Neuengamme. The success
with which this task was carried out was due not
least to the extraordinary assistance we received
from the Danish Jutland corps, which, organized
with the most commendable speed, arrived at
Neuengamme only twelve hours later. The
Scandinavians were saved; but what became of all the
other prisoners, who numbered about 20,000? I
don’t know, and I was not present when the
evacuation was carried out, but my Swedish comrades
told me that it was hurried and brutal. The
non-Scandinavians were pushed into freight trains
whose destination no one knew. Questioned about
it, the German commandant shrugged his
shoulders: “Keine Ahnung” (“I have no idea”). The
freight trains, like others of those ghostly trains
that had so often steamed eastward in
German-occupied countries in the years just past,
disappeared in the distance with its human cargo and
has not been heard of since.
