made their hearts lighter. And certainly the
Danish food was very different from what they
had been given in Germany.

“Du gamla, du fria . . .” There they stood,
these men and women who had risked their lives
for their country, softly humming the Swedish
national anthem, or whistling it under their breath.
It was when I stepped out on to the steps of the
hospital hut that I came upon this scene, perhaps
the most moving of all. It was a salute that went
straight to my heart. These people were still
captives, but they felt freedom within reach. But
they well knew what would happen if at that
moment German camp discipline were to be
enforced. In their desire to show their gratitude they
risked that, and they could not have done it in a
more beautiful manner.

At three o’clock the following morning I was
awakened by a telephone call from the Gestapo
chief at Flensburg, who informed me that
Brigadeführer Schellenberg wished to speak to me
about a most urgent matter. As I had promised to
visit another Jutland camp prepared for
Scandinavian prisoners of war arriving from Germany,
