There was no electric current, and two candles
on our “conference table” provided the only
illumination.

The head of the Gestapo began his review of
the situation by saying that quite possibly Hitler
was already dead, and that, if he were not, he
certainly would be within the next few days. The
Führer had gone to Berlin to die with the
inhabitants of the capital. Berlin was surrounded, and it
was only a question of a few days before it would
fall. On the three previous occasions when we had
met I had suggested to him, Himmler continued,
that he should end the war. He said he had
recognized that I was right—that the situation was
hopeless, that the war must end and Germany admit
herself defeated—but he had not been able to break
his oath to the Führer. Now matters were
different. It was quite possible that Hitler was already
dead.

“I admit that Germany is defeated.” The head
of the Gestapo pronounced these words with a
gesture of resignation. What was going to happen?
Himmler, pursuing this line of thought, broached
