negotiations with Eisenhower on this question, and
that it was therefore not certain that the Swedish
Government’s assistance would be needed from
then on.

At 10.15 on Monday, May 7th, came the
final communication from Count Schwerin von
Krosigk. In the night of May 6th–7th, the
German Minister for Foreign Affairs reported that
Germany’s complete capitulation had been
decided upon. Negotiations between him and
General Eisenhower about the signing of the
capitulation were still proceeding. I at once informed the
Swedish Crown Prince, General C. A.
Ehrensvärd of the Defense Staff, and Mr. Boheman of
what had happened. I was probably the first
Swede to learn of this great event.


This, then, was the end. The war in Europe was
a thing of the past. The nightmare that was the
Nazi system had ceased to be a reality. Millions of
people could now set their minds on the work of
reconstruction, the creation of a happier world.
In this moment I felt profound gratitude that I
had been privileged to take a part in the events of
