Schellenberg’s Story
Before the meeting Himmler was extremely
strung up, and at the last moment he wanted to
cancel it. However, it took place in the presence
of Reichsarbeitsminister Seldte, who had at one
time been the leader of the Stahlhelm. During the
meeting von Krosigk talked with Himmler while
I conferred with Seldte. The latter was of the
opinion that Himmler must take over the
leadership and compel Hitler, on the occasion of his
birthday, to read a proclamation to the German
people in which it should be announced that a
plebiscite would be held, a new party formed, and
the People’s Courts abolished.
After the conference von Krosigk informed
me that he had discussed with Himmler all the
questions that we had gone over, and that he had
earnestly entreated him to take action against the
Führer. Himmler thanked me for having
arranged a meeting with the Minister of Finance.
I replied that in my opinion von Krosigk was the
only person whom he could appoint as
Ribbentrop’s successor in the Ministry for Foreign
Affairs. Himmler agreed with me; but then he
