Schellenberg’s Story

should resign and commit suicide, but he wanted
to discuss the situation once more with me.

Some hectic and nerve-racking days followed,
without sleep and with difficult and dangerous
motor drives through the actual battle zone.
When, on May 1st, I first arrived with Himmler
at Dönitz’s headquarters at Plön, I found a very
tense atmosphere. It was soon evident that von
Krosigk held the same views as Himmler and I,
whereas Dönitz, as well as Keitel and Jodl—that
is, the chief military commanders—were not at
that time in any circumstances prepared to give
up Norway without a fight. They particularly
pointed out that the German commander in
Norway, Colonel General Böhme, was in a very
strong strategic position.

The negotiations continued. For a long time
Dönitz hesitated to agree to the proposals of von
Krosigk and myself. In the end I was appointed
envoy, with instructions to conduct negotiations
in Stockholm for the surrender of the troops in
Norway. As for the events from then until May
7th, they are known to you.
