Tekniska Museets arkiv
The article begins with a short history of the Archives of Tekniska Museet
(Museum of Science and Technology) in Stockholm. The duties of the Archives
and Library departement are discussed.
The records in the Archives are brought together in the context of the general
work of the museum, that of collecting, preserving and registering objects, tools,
drawings, machines, models etc. that are likely to give information about the
history and the development of engineering, technology and industry in Sweden.
The general plan for the organization and work of the museum States that it is
also the aim of the museum to illustrate the influence of technological advances
on society and the living conditions of the individual.
The collecting of drawings and documents has always gone alongside with the
collecting of objects like machines, tools etc. From the start Tekniska Museet was
a private institution without any government subsidies and it was not until 1965
that the Government granted financial support. In 1971 a post as archivist was
created, and since then, one assistant has been employed and seven people have
been given work in the archives by the Labour Market Board. The premises have
been changed and improved and still offer good working conditions, but the lack
of space is now beginning to make things difficult.
The archival material is arranged in the following main groups.
1. material on the history of technology, engineering and industry
2. biographical material
3. collections of drawings
4. private files and records
5. current correspondence file (internal office file)
6. library of books and periodicals
The first group contains a great variety of material, e. g. descriptions of pro-
duction techniques, photos, catalogues, price lists, advertising publications, pic-
tures, stamps, sketches and drawings of industrial machines and plants. Most of
the material is stored in folders, which are kept in folio boxes. The folders are
numbered from 1 to 3733. The number of boxes is 3700. One number represent-
ing one subject can be divided into subdivisions by means of a combination of
letters and figures, which makes the system very flexible. One single number may
comprise more than 100 boxes, as is the case for subject groups like motor vehicles
and aviation.
The biographical material contains i. a. photos, portraits, artides and news-
paper cuttings all kept in 40 000 envelopes (C 5).
There are 350 000 drawings, some of them from the 18th century. Of the
private files and records kept as separate entities, mention should be made of the
Rinman files containing mainly correspondence about mining, the Sahlin files
mainly about mining industry and the Nerén collection of material on the history
of motorism.
The library has 800 running meters of encyclopedias and reference books, but
it is not complete, and that is not necessary as the excellent library of Kungl.
Tekniska Högskolan (Royal Institute of Technology) is easily accessible.
