all southern countries under the trade name of “Flem-
ish butter”;and our great Danes stroll up and down in
these parts, always being taken for German dogs. In
Venice I have seen Englishmen and Americans melt
with sentimentality over the songs of Christian
Winther, set to the music of Johann Peter Emilius
Hartmann; but the inside of the title-page bore the re-
mark: “From a German Romanza.” British school
textbooks of history describe King Canute the Great
as an English king, who conquered Denmark and Nor-
way. And in German histories of German literature,
the “Golden Horns” figure as the earliest monuments
of the German language! The great nations are like
whales; they open their jaws and consume everything
without a thought; floating bottles and tin cans as well
as fishes and mollusks. They are not very discerning
in their taste; otherwise we might season ourselves
with a slightly bitter flavor to ward off their attentions,
At present, we can only hope that they may find us
indigestible and later eject us more or less intact.
So I consoled myself; and I made up my mind not
to tear the bandage from the eyes of my compatriots
at home, but to let them live and die confidently be-
lieving that the rest of the world expects great things
from us and regards us as the most enlightened people
on earth.
While Denmark leads its shadowy non-existence
apart, another little country constantly attracts atten-
tion to itself, Switzerland. Every day it is mentioned
in progressive newspapers and by progressive politi-
cians, for its situation and its institutions. It has a
halo of ideals—ideals of the future. Depressing this
