There are very presentable shops in Seville, in which
they will not wrap up your purchases unless you re-
quest it. Other shops, better acquainted with the
amenities of business, will furnish wrapping paper, but
it will be second-hand paper, already once used. There
are splendid modern department stores here, with fine
dressing-rooms and comfortable arm-chairs for cus-
tomers. If you should require cheviot for a suit of
clothes it may be your lot to have the shopkeeper offer
you a lady’s jacket, because it happens to be more ac-
cessible, or because he has made up his mind he must
get rid of it. He cannot comprehend the fanatical
obstinacy with which you revert again and again to
this silly cheviot. His cheviot happens to be in the
rear room of the shop, or perhaps is as far away as
the first story. He assures you that he sold the last
lot yesterday and can barely conceal his joy when he
accompanies you across the street to the shop of his
competitor. These shopkeepers even ask with a slight
bow whether you do not wish to have the package de-
livered. But the package will remain in their shops
until you call for it.
The Andalusian merchant is no more concerned with
the sale of his goods than the merchant of Morocco.
Often you must take him away from a conversation in
some neighboring house. He will promise to come at
once, but goes on with his conversation. Or you will
find him seated in his shop engaged in eating. You
must wait until he gets through. Perhaps he is buried
in his newspaper. Have patience! If you show any
irritation, he will become brusque—there is no one to
