he will shut up shop and take a walk.
German factory owners in Seville have informed me
that it is almost impossible to operate a factory with
Andalusian workingmen, since they are too independ-
ent, too obstinate to allow definite hours of work to
be assigned to them. They are not lazy. Sometimes
they are ready to work day and night; but the factor
that determines their energy is never the urgency of
the work to be done, but their own caprice. If they
happen to feel disposed, they will celebrate a Blue
Monday and it is impossible to tempt them to work
by any offer of money.
The beginnings of a change are no doubt already
observable. Not so very long ago, Andalusia was
obliged to obtain all its servants from northern Spain;
now even Andalusians of the lower classes are begin-
ning to be applicants for such posts. However they
always bring their ideas of independence with them and
a staff of servants consisting of Andalusians is a very
interesting one.
If a servant-girl’s mistress tells the maid, “You must
look after the house and the children to-day; we are
going out this afternoon,” it is not unusual for her to
receive the answer: “But I was going out myself to-
day!” ‘There are even cases where a servant-girl will
leave her cooking pots and take a walk in broad day-
light.
Nor would it avail to go to court about it. Isn’t the
servant-girl as good as any one else, though the others
may have more money? And has not their dear Lord
created the bright daylight so that people may enjoy
it? A simple order would not settle the question, for
