the Andalusian recognizes no one above himself and
will not even submit to obligations which he has volun-
tarily assumed. Punishments merely make him ob-
stinate. The servant-girl will simply go out. If there
is any objection on the part of her mistress, the girl
will leave so exacting a post. But if you accept her
whims, you are considered a kind employer and the
demands made on you for pay and food are very
small.
There are quite a number of old noble families in
Andalusia who have not a penny to call their own.
Yet they keep male servants and maid servants who
remain with them for many years, though they never
see a month’s wages and are obliged to beg their own
food from neighboring families. They even go so far
as to make advances of money to their employers out
of their own small savings. They seek to obtain credit
for their employers, and in their interests will lie, beg,
and cheat. Under all circumstances they will look
after their masters, but in return, they demand that all
their human dignity be respected, and this human
dignity may at times be a considerable item.
The servant-girl becomes initiated into all the secrets
of the house as soon as she takes up her position; but
she will never gossip them about unless her employers
try snobbishly to keep them hidden from her. She
sings anywhere in the house, whenever she likes; joins
in the conversation when there are visitors; antici-
pates the mistress’ vigorous onslaughts on the master
of the house, and gives him a piece of her mind. In
affairs of the heart, she is always the eldest daughter’s
ally against her parents, and in the secret liaisons
which are almost the rule in upper-class marriages, she
