It comes out that he has inherited from his father a
great estate near Murcia and that since he came into
the property, his tenants hand over heavier shares to
him; what they formerly paid was not enough for him!
But this peculiar- circumstance appears not to cast
doubt on the integrity of his theories in any way, nor
even to concern his fellow revolutionaries at all. You
see, they are Andalusians.
However, there is a distinct line of cleavage between
these cottagers and the other villagers, who believe
that the cottagers have muskets concealed in the caves
in the rocks. It is they who are the consciously revolu-
tionary element, and they stick firmly together. The
spirit of companionship in which they associate with
each other, and the long cold glances with which the
other inhabitants treat them as they walk in groups
down the street, indicate very clearly that they are a
distinct caste within this little society. They are re-
garded partly with envy, and partly with fear which
leads people to keep away from them to avoid any
difficulties. They have even established an evening
school in which their children as well as the adolescent
young men may learn to read and write, while the rest
of the inhabitants must content themselves with the
oral religious instruction imparted by the priests.
Most of the grown-ups also have taught themselves to
read. They have formed a newspaper circle which re-
ceives anarchist and socialist periodicals, have more or
less severed their relations with the church, and a few
of them, such as Alfonso M., openly oppose the church.
This peaceful man flies into a rage whenever he even
thinks of a clergyman. All the injustices that have
been committed by the priests who keep down the
