Spanish people seem to have been deposited at the
bottom of his soul as a hatred that is so strong as to
drive him even to be consistent. He does not pro-
nounce the usual Spanish salutation: Vaya con Dios!
but says instead: Vaya en salud!; and when he en-
counters a priest accompanied by the monstrance, he
would rather be fined for his transgression than bare
his head in greeting.
When our path leads us by a wooden crucifix that
has been erected by the priests on a rock above the vil-
lage, he kicks it over with his foot. Don Louis ap-
proves his act and praises it, but the older man, the
cautious Pedro, the chairman of the agricultural
laborers’ organization, sets up the cross again and re-
bukes him seriously.
“You must not forget that you are a marked man
already,” he says. ‘The slightest little fuss and you
will find yourself looking into the muzzle of a gen-
darme’s rifle. And we can’t get along without you,”
he adds quietly.
Alfonso indulges in an excessively boisterous step.
He has red specks on his temples. But suddenly he
becomes more restrained.
“Forgive me—TI can’t help it,” he says downcast, as
he embraces Pedro.
How simple they are, these people! How thought-
less and inexperienced! They count on being able to
arouse fifty thousand men in the province of Granada,
and perhaps they are not altogether wrong. But they
imagine that they could conquer the province with two
thousand rifles. For this purpose they are assidu-
ously collecting weapons, and Don Louis recounts with
a mien of secrecy that he already has gained possession
