“Is it the Madonna of the Grapes or perhaps the
White Madonna?” (two goddesses of the vineyard),
asks the peasant far off in the mountains.
“Ts it the Madonna of Pain or the Old Madonna?”
(the favorite Madonnas of Granada), ask Beppa and
the others. ‘“‘You shall see, it is the Madonna of
Pain,” adds Beppa with importance, for the Madonna
of Pain is her special guardian saint.
“No, it is the Madonna del Pilar,” say I, who have
brought this bit of news.
“Bah, it is always Seville!” they say as they turn
up their noses. “What great thing can she have done?
I suppose she just walked about a bit. She cannot do
anything else,” some one adds contemptuously. It is
not to be wondered at that Beppa at once ascends to
my room, where the Madonna of Pain is hanging, and
has a little discussion with her, ending with a good-
natured bit of consolation:
“Well, well, don’t be down-hearted over it; your
turn will come next.” She speaks just as if she were
a father or a mother whose child had been worsted in
some encounter with another child.
Needless to say, the Madonna of Pain can also re-
veal herself. The women told of many examples, and
I myself remembered from my last stay in this town,
that she revealed herself to an assembly of five thou-
sand persons. It was late one spring evening, when
Beppa came in and related that there must be some-
thing doing, for so many people were walking through
the streets. I hastened down the street, following the
crowd to a great square that was black with people.
They were staring at the roof of a house on which the
Madonna had revealed herself. On the roof was a
