white chimney, with the moon shining behind it. Quite
possibly white clouds of vapor occasionally rose from
the chimney, like a saint’s halo. Next day this fact
was reported in the papers.
But this was only the beginning; this was only the
Madonna’s way of arousing men’s attention. Shortly
thereafter she accomplished a positive miracle. It was
at the time of the Cuban War, and there was a great
service of celebration one day in the Church of the
Madonna of Pain, which is the most frequented in
Granada, for the benefit of certain volunteers who
were to leave for Cuba on the following morning.
There were many torches and candles and above the
high altar sat enthroned the Madonna of Pain,
adorned in her most precious mantle, which was em-
broidered with real jewels. On the following day it
appeared that a large hole had been burnt in the back
of the mantle. This was a great loss, but the priests
at once explained that the damage could not possibly
have been inflicted as a result of carelessness in the
handling of a wax-candle, for such an event would
have caused the mantle to burn from the bottom up
and not straight across. Expressing a truly divine in-
spiration, one of the priests interpreted the phenom-
enon as due to the fact that the Madonna had been in
Cuba during the night and had fought against the
rebels there. The flames from the rebels’ cannons or
perhaps a bomb—God alone would know—must have
burnt this hole in the back of her garment. Of course,
the Madonna could have protected her mantle as well
as herself, but she needed this hole as an evidence to
unbelievers. More than ten thousand persons visited
the church during the next few days. Gifts flowed in in
