great abundance and the Madonna was given a new
cloak even more splendid than the old.
The various Madonnas have no connection with
each other. Over a century ago, the adherents of the
various Madonnas used to meet in savage street fights
and to this day there is a very strong feeling between
them. To change one’s Madonna or one’s saint is
equivalent to an outright defection, and I have rarely
seen Beppa so excited as when an old aunt from Seville
attempted to persuade her to try her luck with San
Esperitu, who has in Seville about the same position
as San Antonio in Granada. It would have been just
as reasonable to propose that she should become a con-
vert to Mohammedanism.
But the Madonna of Pain has quite a number of
churches besides the church in Granada. Everywhere
around in the country there are altars with her wooden
image, more or less richly dressed. And there is no
relation between any of these either. The Madonna
in Malaga was not in Cuba on the occasion above de-
scribed, nor was the Madonna of Pain in Cadiz or the
other one, in Cuba. As a matter of fact, the latter
does not amount to very much anyway. It was the
Madonna of Pain in Granada, the wooden image,
cloak and all, that fought the rebels that night; and
the peasants of the Vega, who have their own Ma-
donnas of Pain standing in their villages, will come to
town for the express purpose of worshiping this Ma-
donna because she is the best of all. The process of
concentration goes on apace. The wooden image be-
comes the actual incarnation of the divine properties.
Back of it there are mists, at best a few vaguely float-
ing outlines.
