256 DAYS IN THE SUN
few gypsy girls have taken their seats. They babble
and distort their flabby features into broad grins and
-ape-like grimaces. They lay their heads in each other’s
laps, and while the busy finger-nails of their friends
search for vermin they eye the passers-by, chew pine-
cones and talk together in languishing tones. Truly
they are like the monkeys in the zoo.
