THE BULLFIGHT
PRING-TIME. Granada had had no bullfight
for an eternity—not a single performance for six
months. For a bullfight is an expensive business and
the Granadinos are poor people. But do I really mean
to say that there is a single beggar or an old discarded
wretch, a poor tenant or cripple in all Granada who
will not find means to get the fifty cents to pay for his
admission ticket, if a bullfight is announced?
Certainly not; but Granada is only a city of the
third rank, in which the great geniuses—the bull-
fighters by the grace of God, whose eyes never fail
and whose hands never err—do not find it worth their
while to appear in public.
Well, suppose it is—are we unreasonable in our de-
mands? Do we insist on first-class art? Did we not
swallow the affront when an animal announced in the
program as black turned out to have a white speck?
Did we not accept a bullfighter who struck the bull in
his eyes instead of between the shoulders? And did
we fire the stand for the kind of reasons they gave in
Valencia and Barcelona?
No, but we did once bombard the Police Prefect
with rotten eggs and drove both the bull and the bull-
fighter from the arena with our sticks, tore down the
whole circus and finally raided the box office to get
back our money!
We did. But think of our provocation! They gave
