“PII start on it at once. You can have it in an
hour.”
“But you must get it done to-day without fail, I am
leaving early to-morrow morning.” He looked at
me in astonishment.
“But did I not tell you that you may have it in an
hour?”
After the hour had passed, the shoe was not done;
the man’s mother-in-law—it was explained to me—had
died in the meantime. But he would surely come to my
house by evening.
He did not come; I found him sitting at his table on
the sidewalk, reading his newspaper. No, the shoe is
not done; but it would have been done had it not been
for his mother-in-law; no one else is to blame but this
mother-in-law! It was bad enough while she was
alive, but now that she is dead she is comporting her-
self ten times more inconsiderately; she simply cannot
be gotten under the ground. If I am married, I must
surely understand the situation. The fact is she had
once been married to a Protestant, a Frenchman or
African or something like that, and now the priests are
not sure that she has a right to be interred in Catholic
soil. He has had a lot of running about to do on this
account. But to-morrow morning for certain. The
Holy Virgin and the Sacrament are called upon to wit-
` ness that he will have to work all night merely because
of this cursed mother-in-law; and my shoe shall be the
first object touched by his hand: “You may rest as-
sured, Seforito!” and he laid his hand on my shoulder.
Early the next morning I banged the knocker on his
door for half an hour. Finally the man came out half
dressed, his eyes tearful with slumber. I told him I
came for a shoe.
