A VISION OF SUDDEN DEATH 283
“A shoe? Yesterday, you say? Promised it for to-
day?” And the man whom I had seen sitting here on
the sidewalk every day and who had even occasionally
had the honor of polishing my shoes insisted that I
must have made a mistake in the address of my shoe-
maker. But he soon abandoned this untenable posi-
tion and by imperceptible stages gradually trans-
formed himself into a great master-shoemaker who
could not be held responsible for all the promises made
by his employees—conditions being as they were, un-
fortunately, in Granada.
“But it was you yourself, Sir; my God, you know it
was. You even told me into the bargain that your
mother-in-law—”’
He listened attentively; the entire expression of his
face betrayed his zeal to get at the bottom of this
curious position. Suddenly a light seemed to dawn in
his mind: “Then it must be my brother you were talk-
ing to! He said his mother-in-law had died, didn’t he?
And that he had a lot of trouble about the funeral?
Why, the matter is very simple, I see it all now!” He
laughed heartily and was so delighted with his solu-
tion of the enigma, that he felt obliged to repeat the
whole story through a little window to his wife, inside
the house.
“Yes, that was my brother,” he again turned to me.
“He is the spitting image of me, well, well! That’s
the way things go! But why are you so anxious to
take this rickety omnibus? Why don’t you hire a car-
riage to drive you over to Daifontes? And you can
catch the train and you need not leave here before
noon.” i
“So you think a little difference of about five dollars
in the expense will be all the same to me?”
