c) ch, ph, sh och th (hvilka hafva ett ljud) behandlas som enkla
konsonanter: bach’-e-lor, geo-grapJi-ic (geografisk), neph-ew, phil-os-o-phy,
fish-er-man, fa-ther, weath-er, broth-er, oth-er-wise.
5) När flere konsonanter stå mellan två vokaler, så räknas
vanl. en till den föregående, de öfriga till den senare stafvelsen:
ap-ple, hos-tUr.
6) Samstående vokaler skiljas, såvida de ej bilda diftong
+
eller uttalas med ett ljud: i-de-a, so-ci-e-ty; men: great-er, cow’-ard
(feg; mes), roy-al, voy-age, o-pin-ion.
7) När en konsonant (annan än och en eller flere följande
vokaler) likasom sammansmält i uttalet, böra de ej skiljas på olika
/-V /—\ • v
rader: par-tial, suf-ß-cient, su-per-fi-cial (ytlig), phy-si-cian, di-vi-sion,
con-di-tion, di-stinc-tion, de-li-cious, pro-nun-ci-a-tion, con-science,
conscious, pos-ture, vir-tuous, righ-teous, pn-geon; men: anx-ious,
con-nex-ion, lux-u-ri-ous.
8) Stumt e gör icke särskild stafvelse, såvida det ej kan få
minst två föregående konsonanter med sig, såsom t. ex. uti: ta-ble,
crip-ple, a-cre.
På stumt e slutas alla ord, som hafva till slutljud s ell. z
efter lång vokal, och alla, som hafva till slutljud i, u, v, q, elL
lent c, äfvensom de flesta enstafviga, hvilkas slutljud är o, t. ex.
house, please, seize; die, lie, tie, due, argue, a’gue, continue; live,
give, have; dance, slice, price, glance; age, cour age, advantage;
doe, toe, foe.
Stumt e bortfaller vanl. framför ändelser, som börja med

vokal: live, living; haste, hasty (hastig, snabb, häftig).
Anm. a) Uti ord der e föregås af lent c eli. g (och i några få
andra) bibehålles det framför hård vokal: peace, peaceable (fredlig);
courage, courageous; move, moveable; sale, saleable (säljbar).
b) ord på ee behålla sitt stumma e framför ändelse, som börjar
med annan vokal än e: agree, agreeing, agreeable.
c) to dye (färga), to singe (sveda) och to swinge (piska) bibehålla
likaledes e framför ing: dyeing, singeing, swingeing, till skilnad från:
dying (af die), singing (af sing) och swinging (af swing, gunga).
