M. Very well, give one to each boy, and put round
the ink; those who want anything else, had better get it at
once, that we may not be disturbed during the lesson; and
now, if you are ready, we will begin.
34- III School, b.) (Dialogue the 7th.)
Master. Come, the bell has rung some time, you ought
all to be in your places; let each one take his seat quietly—•
sit a little higher up there.
Boy. There is no room, sir. Hadn’t some of us better
go on the other form ?
M. Yes, if there really is not room; let the first three
take their seats on the bench behind.
Boy. They might go a little lower at the bottom, sir.
M. No pushing there, no pushing; there is plenty of
room for all. — A little farther down there, the bottom boy!
that will do, and now let us have silence.
Boy. Can I have a new pen, if you please, sir? mine
is such a bad one.
M. What is the matter with it?
Boy. It won’t mark the up-strokes at all, sir; it is
so hard.
M. Well, here is another, but take care of it — and
what is the matter with yours?
Boy. Please, sir, it spirts, my book is all covered with
blots.
M. That is because you don’t hold it properly; you
see, when I write with it, it does not spirt, as you call it.
Remember, if you wish to write well, you must keep your
pen-holder pointed to your shoulder.
Boy. May I have a quill, sir? I can write much better
with a quill-pen than a steel.
M. No, I prefer your using steel-pens; for in addition
to their being better adapted for wTriting, it saves the trouble
of mending. I hear some one scratching there; put both
nibs down on the paper together, and you won’t make that
noise. James, can you say your spelling?
James. Not quite, sir, I was all yesterday evening
writing mv theme.
M. You must have been very idle then, for you have
not written above a dozen lines.
James. Please, sir, it’s so difficult, I never know what
to say.
M. That is because you do not read sufficiently; I
never, by any chance, see you with a book in your hand,
except when you are obliged; but, however, that is no excuse
