Läsebok. N:o 32—33.
for your not knowing your lesson this morning, you have
had plenty of time for both; do you think you can say it?
James. No, sir, I’m sure I can’t.
M. Then you must stay in after school, and learn it;
and remember, I must have it said perfectly.
jBoy. Shall I collect the books, sir? it is eleven o’clock.
M. Yes, but, let me see them before you put them
away — whose is this?
Boy. Mine, sir.
M. This is very badly done; you have evidently taken
no pains with it at all, there is not an »i» dotted nor a »t»
crossed in the whole copy — you will learn twenty lines of
Cæsar afterwards, for vour carelessness.

Boy. Please, sir, I can’t write any better, some one was
jogging the desk all the while.
M. That is a very lame excuse; the shaking of the desk
need not have prevented you from crossing vour »t»s — why
did you not speak to me ?
2 Boy. Please, sir, I found this ruler on the ground,
what shall I do with it?
M. Do with it? Give it to the owner, of course. Has
any one lost a ruler? No one? Give it to me, perhaps it
belongs to some one in the other class. You may go now —
but quietly, I shall call back any one who makes a noise.
35. Louis XI and the Astrologer.
An astrologer had foretold to Louis XI that a lady,
whom he esteemed very much, would die in eight days; which
having happened, the king ordered the astrologer to be
brought before him, and his servants to throw him out of
the window at a given signal. As soon as the king saw him,
he said: »You who pretend to the knowledge of future events
and know so exactly the fate of others, tell me: how long
have you yourself to live?» The astrologer answered: »Sire,
I shall die just three davs before vour Majesty». — The

king was in no haste to give the signal.
36. Enigma.
’Twas whisper’d in lieaven, and muttered in /;ell,
And echo caught softly the words as they fell:
In the confines of earth, ’t was permitted to rest,
And the depths of the ocean its presence confess’d,
It was seen in the lightning and heard in the t/iunder,
’Twill be found in the sp/teres when all riven asunder:
It was given to man with earliest breath,
It assists at his birth and attends him in death;
