9) Because, »emedan», as, »som», since, »eftersom»,
t. ex. Why did you not come yesterday? Because I had no
time. (Jfr ty. weil, fr. parceque.) - As I had no time, I
did not go. (Jfr ty. bd, fr. comme.) - Since these men
could not be convinced, it was determined that they should be
persecuted. (Jfr ty. da, da ja, fr. puisque.)
10) »Knappt» - »förr än» heter scarcely (hardly] -
when (before, ere) eller no sooner - than, t. ex. Scarcely
had he uttered these words, before the minister appeared.
191. Med afseende på konjunktionernas plats märkes,
a) att too och vanl. also sättas efter den satsdel de förbinda
med något föregående, t. ex. Not only his fortune, his
reputation too is lost. My brother will come to you, and I
will also; b) att however (i bet. »likväl»), then, therefore
vanl. sättas efter något (l. några) af de första orden i satsen,
t. ex. He was, however, a good man. For the present, then,
I have no hope.
Märk äfven ordföljden i följande satser:
Poor as I am, I am happy (så fattig jag än är o. s. v.). However
poor I am, (yet) I am happy (huru fattig jag än är o. s. v.- -
märk: yet alltid i början af satsen). Though he is rich, (yet) he is not
proud. Religion gives to both rich and poor the same consolation (eller
both to rich and poor etc.). I will engage neither in alliances nor
quarrels (eller in neither etc.). I will not engage either in etc. (eller
in either etc.). He enquired of me whether or no his wife went out
alone (eller whether his wife went out alone or no).
9. Om Ordföljden.
Engelskan har i allmh. samma ordföljd i hufvudsatser
och bisatser. Den är antingen rak eller omvänd.
