Note.

The manuscript of this paper was written, as mentioned in the
preface, in January 1940 and was completed and printed later. Before
the work could be published, the war between Finland and the Soviet
Union was ended by the Moscow peace treaty on March 13th, 1940,
by which large tracts of land were cut off from the rest of Finland and
very considerable changes consequently occurred in the forest
resources of the country. Although the title indicates that the
description of Finland’s forest resources refers to the second National Survey
of the forests in 1936—1938, i. e. to the whole of Finland, it may be
worth while mentioning a few special points.

As the particular purpose consisted in comparing the results of
the first National Survey in 1922—1923 and of the second in 1936—
1938 in order to establish the development of the forest resources,
the work should be of importance in its present form, though it does
not actually describe the forest resources of the post-war reduced
area of Finland. These resources cannot be established until the new
frontiers are known precisely and in detail. In order to supplement
the data it is, however, worth mentioning, on the basis of summary
estimates, some approximate figures that give some idea of the forest
resources of the country after the conclusion of peace.
