22 Yrjö Ilvessalo, The Forest .’Resources’ of Finland in 1936—1938
medium-aged forests, in which for the present only thinning cutting
can be undertaken, are very abundant;
the age-classes approaching maturity are normally represented as
well as mature age-classes in accordance with the average rotation
referred to; ’
fairly young forests are represented more or less normally, but the
youngest age-class, seedling stands, is far below the normal quantity;
it should be noted, however, that this deficiency is remedied partly,
though principally only in the case of spruce forests, by the
undergrowth below the predominant forest.
In the northern half of Finland the average rotation varies very
considerably from the southern parts to the northernmost forest limit,
but may be regarded as sufficient at 160—180 years at any rate. The
age-classes can therefore be described in broad lines as follows:
medium-aged forests are abundant;
age-classes approaching maturity are normally represented and
mature age-classes are very plentiful;
fairly young forests are more or less normally represented, but the
youngest age-classes, especially seedling stands, very scarcely; this
deficiency is not remedied by the undergrowth to the same extent as
in the southern half of the country.
In Table 11 the figures illustrating the age-classes according to
the new survey and according to the survey in 1922—23 are given for
Table 11. Age-classes in the years 1936—38 and 1922—23.
