ference for spruce. In Ostrobothnia and North Finland there has
been a small reduction in the total volume of pine.
The total volume of spruce has increased by 22.3 million m3
since 1922—23. This is probably due to spruce undergrowth having
been released on large areas and to the growth of spruce having
increased owing to this release, to the draining of good spruce swamps
and to the decrease of pastured forests, as well as to the great
preference for spruce that has been visible lately, principally at the cost
of pine. If the southern half of Finland is considered separately, the
increase in the total volume of spruce amounts to 42.1 million m3,
or almost double the total increase of spruce in the whole country.
In North Finland the total volume of spruce has fallen off by 19.8
million m3. Such a reduction of spruce in North Finland will probably
continue, for the forest soils there are generally pine soils, from which
spruce is bound to retreat in the course of time on account of its poorer
yield. An increase in the volume of spruce has occurred especially in
West Finland (about 17 per cent since 1922—23), but is also
noticeable in East Finland (about 11 per cent) and to some extent in
Ostrobothnia (about 7 per cent).
The total volume of birch has turned out on this occasion
23.2 million m3 less than in 1922—23, but, if it is borne in mind that
the total volume of birch was estimated about 8 per cent too high in
1922—23 owing to the volume tables employed at that time, as already
stated, the result is that the total volume of birch has not decreased
at all in reality, but, rather, has increased slightly. It should also be
noted that the reduction has occurred mainly in North Finland, where
