Yrjö Ilvessalo, The Forest .’Resources’ of Finland in 1936—1938

it is to a great extent due to the f jelds that grow the poorest birch and
which now have been classified as waste land. In the southern half
of Finland the total volume of birch ultimately amounts, when the
figures are brought into proportion to each other, to fully 10 million m3
more than in 1922—23. The increase refers mainly to the waterway
regions of West Finland.

The total volume of aspen is small. In absolute figures there
is a small, but relatively a large increase since 1922—23. Possibly the
growing stock of aspen may consist to a great extent of trees of small
size which have been allowed to grow. Aspen stands may have been
preferred because of the high price of aspen wood of high quality.
Finally it should be mentioned, however, that the figure for the
growing stock of aspen is comparatively small and may therefore be liable to
considerable uncertainty.

The total volume of alder is still smaller than the volume of
aspen. It is confined almost entirely to the forests of South and Central
Finland. The increase in the volume of alder, in spite of the area of
the forests dominated by this species having been reduced, is due to the
fact that a considerable part of the alder stands — even of those with
spruce undergrowth — has been allowed to continue to grow and the
increment percentage is very high on account of the young age of the
alder stands.

The division of the total volume into diameter classes is
illustrated by Table 17 on the basis of breast-height diameter. As a
