general feature a considerable decrease is visible in the volume of the
growing stock of large trees, i.e. trees of a diameter of not less than
20 cm at breast-height. For the whole country this decrease amounts
to 12.6 per cent. Bearing in mind the remarks already made regarding
the total growing stock, and especially regarding the volume of birch,
the decrease is not quite as great as is indicated by the figures in the
table. The decrease in the growing stock of large trees is most striking
in East Finland. The diameter class of 10—20 cm has increased
considerably, and the class of the smallest trees of a diameter below 10 cm
has remained, on the whole, unchanged.

The generally prevalent idea that the growing stock of large trees
in the Finnish forests has been decreasing of late is therefore proved
true. The growing stock consists to a greater extent than formerly
of raw materials for the so-called small-wood working industry. The
Finnish woodworking industry is, indeed, known to have developed
rapidly in this direction in recent years. Nevertheless, the growing
stock of large trees can be increased considerably, even within a couple
of decades, by economising this part of the growing stock sufficiently
and by treating it always by correct silvicultural cuttings.
