Finland and finally by Ostrobothnia which is the poorest in this
respect . The large number of spruce trees of large size in West Finland
as compared to other parts of the country is particularly striking.

A comparison in regard to the quantity of trees of large size cannot
be made with the results of the survey in 1922—23, seeing that a
calculation of trees suitable for the sawmill and plywood industry
was not made at that time, all trees of a breast-height diameter of not
less than 20 cm then being classified as »trees of large size».

As the size and quality of the logs to be obtained from every tree
of large size was estimated on the sample plots, it is possible to give
a very detailed statement concerning the quantity, structure and
quality of the trees of large size. These must be postponed for later
publication, only a summary being made here of the main features
contained in Table 20. In this table the logs are divided according to
their top diameter into two classes: <9" and 9" or more. Pine logs are
divided into three quality classes and spruce and birch logs into two.
In order to make the figures in the table comprehensible a definition
of the quality classes is given below.
Pinelogs.

I. The part of the tree formed by the log has no visible living or dead (dried)
branches. The log is straight, the surface quite smooth without any visible
defects or, of course, any signs of rot. The logs give very nearly 100 % u/s sawn
timber.

II. The log may have a »normal quantity» of living and dead (not rotten)
branches; the diameter of the former must not exceed 2" and of the latter 1 y2".
Very large branches must not occur in distinct whorls. An even curvature is
