1 million m3 and in Ostrobothnia 0.2—0.3 million m3. However, it
should be repeated here what was said above as regards the periodicity
of the growth of pine which is capable of reducing the differences.
The growth of spruce has increased very considerably during
the 15 years: the table indicates an increase of 2.64 million m3 and,
if the difference in the method of calculation is taken into account,
the increase is still 2.0 million m3. The increase refers to the forests
of the southern half of Finland and the greater part of it (1.57—1.3 o
million m3) to the forests of the waterway regions of West Finland.
The part of the increase referring to East Finland is only 0.63—0.45
million and to Ostrobothnia 0.34—0.2 5 million m3.

The growth of birch is indicated by the figure 0.68 million m3
and is lower than formerly. Taking into account what has already
been said regarding the calculation of the volume of birch (see page
24), there has been no actual reduction in the growth of birch, it being
approximately the same as before. With regard to the different parts
of the country it may be said that the growth of birch has decreased
slightly in North Finland and Ostrobothnia and even in East Finland,
but that in West Finland — especially in view of the facts referred
to above—it has increased to some extent.
The growth of aspen has increased slightly during these 15
years, but the growth of alder has fallen off, although it should be
mentioned that these relatively small amounts of growth are
determined with greater uncertainty than the previous ones. The growth
