of aspen would seem to have increased everywhere except in East
Finland. The same seems to be the case as regards the growth of
alder.
An examination of the growth figures of the different species shows
that in the comparatively short period of 15 years a remarkable result
has been achieved by organised activity. Efforts have been made to
encourage spruce in every way, by releasing spruce undergrowth, by
making cuttings on soils of good quality with a view to obtaining an
increase of spruce, by planting spruce, by carrying on propaganda in
favour of spruce etc. In spite of very extensive felling of spruce and
the constantly increasing use of spruce as raw material it has in this
way been possible to increase the annual growth of this species
throughout the country by about 2 million m3 or about 15 per cent, and in
West Finland alone, where silviculture is probably most intensive in
general, the increase amounts to about 25 per cent. In North Finland,
however, where soil suitable for growing spruce is comparatively
scarce, the growth of pine has increased appreciably.
The increase in the growth of spruce does not necessarily mean
that spruce cuttings can now be increased or even be maintained
at their present level, for a very considerable part of the increase
may be due to such young spruce stands or stands that still consist
of very small trees, in which cuttings can only be made after some
time. More light may be thrown on this question by the detailed
results of the National Survey of the forests concerning the condition
of the forests, age-classes and cutting amounts, the calculation of
which will be completed at a later date.
