Conclusion.

According to the National Survey of the forests made in 1936—38
71.3 per cent or 24 840 000 hectares of the land area of Finland, which
amounts altogether in round figures to 34 850 000 ha, consist of
forest land. Of this total 19 580 000 ha represent productive
forest land and 5 260 000 ha poor productive forest land. According
to the first National Survey of the forests made in 1922—23 the forest
area was 25 263 500 ha or 73.5 per cent of the total land area.
However, if the results of this earlier survey are made comparable to the
new results, it may be said that the area of productive forest land in
Finland and the total forest area have in reality been reduced by
about 200 000 ha or about 1 per cent since 1922—23. This is
principally due to the clearing of land for cultivation, building sites, roads
etc.

The area of swamp lands, excluding fields on peat land,
is 11 156 000 ha and the proportion of swamps to the total land area
is 32.0 per cent. The figure for the swamp area is 732 000 ha lower
than the figure obtained in the survey in 1922—23. This is due to the
conversion of swamps into cultivated land etc., to swamps with a thin
peat layer being turned into »firm» forest land by draining and, no
doubt, to the fact that the summers of 1922—23 were rainy, but the
summers of 1936—38 dry, and the ground was consequently much
drier than during the earlier survey.

The forest area is divided according to species of trees
in such a manner that forests dominated by pine represent 52.4 per
cent (48.4 per cent of productive forest land), forests dominated by
spruce 28.3 per cent (33.3 per cent), forests dominated by birch 16.8
per cent (15.6 per cent), forests dominated by aspen 0.2 per cent (0.2
per cent), forests dominated by alder 1.3 per cent (1.6 per cent) and
clear areas l.o per cent (0.9 per cent). Since 1922—23 the forests
dominated by spruce have increased in area by about 750 000 lia,
principally at the cost of forests dominated by pine. Partly, however,
this is also explained by the area of grey alder stands having decreased
by about 50 000 ha and the clear areas by about 120 000 ha, in both
