N%& of the most eager botanists of
the seventeenth century was
no doubt a learned German
physician, Joachim Burser, re-
sident in Annaberg in Saxony,
for he had wandered through
Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and the South of
France, and climbed the Pyrenees, gathering the
flora of each land. In 1625 he was appointed
Professor of Medicine and Natural History at
the University of Soré, in Denmark, where he
taught till his death, in 1649. He had given
his duplicate plants to his learned friend Caspar
