Preface to the electronic edition

After the battle of Poltava in June 1709 (Wikipedia), more than a thousand Swedish prisoners of war were kept in Tobolsk in Siberia for more than a decade until the peace treaty of Nystad in August 1721 (Wikipedia). This book first appeared in 1725 and the second edition in 1728. It has been digitized in 2024 by the Royal Library in Stockholm, from where the scanned images in February 2025 were copied to Project Runeberg. The OCR text was quite bad, so we made our own with Tesseract 5.3 (Fraktur), but the result is almost as bad. Hopefully, we can do better OCR in the future. We have white balanced the scanned images, to increase contrast.

When proofreading, long ſ is changed to short s, the ꜩ ligature is resolved to tz, but ß is kept. (In Swedish texts, ß is changed to ss, but this text is in German.) The shorthand "ꝛc." is changed to "&c." (which means etc. = etcetera). Hyphenated words are joined and moved forward to the next line or page.

This volume was scanned by Kungl. biblioteket, Sweden's national library, from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
