Ur utgivarens förord: "... önskan att berga några förbigångna ax har må hända förledt honom att upptaga ett och annat strå, som bort blifva liggande, och det oaktadt han sjelf är den förste att medgifva att uttrycket medelmåttig poesi innehåller en contradictio in adjecto. Han tror sig emellertid hafva gifvit läsaren full ersättning genom de stycken af några samtida skalder af rang med hvilka han haft lyckan kunna pryda denna samling. Äfven hvad desse angår, har hans ögonmärke varit, att lemna profstycken af sådana författare, som i förr gående samlingar icke varit representerade, eller, då de varit det, icke varit det med, enligt hans mening, rätt karakteristiska stycken."
