tetets oldsagsamling. Vel vilde flytningen have sine van-
skeligheder, og den lod sig, hvad undersøgelsen havde
vist, kun udføre saaledes, at fartøjet blev taget i to dele.
Men det sidste kunde med lethed og uden synderlig
ulempe opnaaes blot ved at overskjære den allerede
brækkede kjøl og de faa planker paa styrbordside, som
efter den tidligere forstyrrelse endnu holdt det hele sam-
men. Efter mit forslag, som tiltraadtes af mine kolleger
i direktionen, blev det derfor bestemt, at skibet skulde
overskjæres paa det nævnte sted og med alt tilbehør
flyttes til Kristiania.

Ved nærmere undersøgelse havde det vist sig, at
skibets største stykke efter overskjæringen vilde faa en
længde af omtrent 14 m. og paa det bredeste blive vel
5 m., og naar alle omstændigheder toges i betragtning,
kunde det neppe ansees muligt at faa dette stykke bragt
til søen ad anden vej end den, som gaar forbi haugen til
Lahelle. Men selv her vilde flytningen blive forbunden
med nogen vanskelighed. Vel er vejen kun omtrent 1
kilometer lang og, paa et par mindre bakker nær, tem-
melig flad og jevn og uden stærke bøjninger, men for at
slippe frem med den omhandlede del af skibet maatte
der efter anstillet maaling midlertidig borttages flere
stakiter og et stengjerde, ja endog bislaget paa et hus.
Dette var dog overkommeligt. En større og den mest
betydende hindring mødte derimod helt nede ved Lahelle,
hvor tre omstændigheder syntes at have sammensvoret
sig for at stænge skibet adgangen til søen. For det første
er selve vejen her meget smalere end noget andet sted
og gjør desuden en bøjning. Endvidere gaar der fra
vejens venstre side en temmelig brat bakke ned mod
stranden. Og endelig reiser der sig til højre en fjeldvæg,
som, hvad der ved nærværende leilighed maatte ansees
værst, ikke har synderlig skraaning, men stiger næsten
lodret i vejret. Efter gjentagne maalinger antoges det
dog, at vi med forsigtighed kunde komme forbi dette
punkt, uden at blive nødte til at foretage en bekostelig
og tidsspildende udvidelse af vejen.

For den videre flytning fra Lahelle var det ønskeligt
at have saa stor pram, at den kunde optage begge skibets
dele. Men efter hvad der blev mig sagt, skulde der i
hele Kristianiafjorden kun findes én saadan pram, som
ejedes af hr. kammerherre F. Treschow ved Larvik. For

med of all its particulars, as when all the articles found
were added to the antiquarian collection of the university.
The removal would certainly be rather difficult, and could
not be managed, unless the vessel were divided into two
parts, as I found out while fully investigating the matter.
This division might be done with great ease and without
any material inconvenience by simply cutting the already
broken keel and these few planks on the starboard-side,
that after the earlier disturbance of the sepulchral chamber
still kept the vessel together. On my proposal to which
my colleges in the directory of our society also agreed, it
was therefore settled, that the vessel should be divided
into two parts, by cutting over the planks mentioned,
and be with all its appurtenances brought to Chri-
Stiania.

When I had more closely examined the two pieces
into which the vessel was to be cut, I found that the
greater part would be about 14 m. long, and, where it
was widest, a little more than 5 m. wide. When all
circumstances were taken into consideration, it seemed
hardly possible to get this piece down to the sea in any
way but by the road to Lahelle, that passes the mound. But
even there the moving would prove rather difficult. For
though the road is certainly but about 1 kilometer long and,
a couple of smaller acclivities excepted, rather flat and
level and without any great curves, I found, on nearer
in vestigation, that in order to get along with the part
mentioned, it would be necessary beforehand to pull
down several railings, one stone-fence and even a pent-

house. This might however easily be done. But we

had a greater and more significant impediment to get

over close to Lahelle, where three circumstances seemed
to have conspired to prevent us from bringing the
vessel down to the sea. In the first place the road
itself is here a good deal narrower than at any other
place, and besides, here it makes a curve. Moreover a
rather precipitous hill goes at this place from the left
side of the road down to the shore. But here the worst
difficulty appeared. That consisted in a rock rising on
the right side of the road almost perpendicularly, without
any slope to speak of. Having however repeatedly mea-
sured the ground, we at last began to hope, that with
proper caution we might perhaps be able to pass this
point without being obliged to lose much time and money
by widening the road.

| In order to move the vessel from Lahelle up to
Christiania, it was desirable to get so large a pram, that
it might hold both parts of the vessel. But, according
to what I was told, there was in the whole Christiania-
fiord but one such pram, and that was one belonging to
