at faa denne pram lejet, henvendte jeg mig derfor til
hans kontor, og blev her meget behagelig overrasket ved
at mødes med det tilbud, at ikke alene prammen men
ogsaa et af kammerherrens bugserdampskibe uden godt-
gjørelse skulde besørge transporten, naar og hvorhen det
maatte ønskes. Dette højst liberale tilbud blev selvfølgelig
modtaget med taknemmelighed, og derved var en ikke
ubetydelig lettelse tilvejebragt.
Da ogsaa de andre nødvendige forberedelser vare
trufne, blev skibet ved hjelp af vindespil med temmelig
lethed trukket ud af haugen og dernæst overskaaret paa
det omtalte sted, hvorefter den største eller forreste del
yderligere blev forstærket og sat paa hjul. Forspændt
med 8, senere 9, heste bevægede dog slæden sig kun
smaat fremad, idet der oftere maatte stanses paa grund
af den bløde vej, hjulenes svaghed og de forholdsregler,
som i den ene eller anden henseende viste sig nødven-
dige. Da vi endelig naaede det ovennævnte vanskeligste
sted, saa det, trods de forrige undersøgelser, noget tvil-
somt ud, om det vilde lykkes at slippe frem. Hestene
maatte spændes fra, da det, som ogsaa ellers ofte, havde
vist sig, at de kun meget ujevnt trak sammen, og de
pludselige rykninger, som derved opstode, lettelig kunde
blive farlige, hvorfor slæden haledes fremover alene ved
hjelp af vindespil. Heldigvis gik det hele godt, skjønt
skibet, hvor det var bredest, engang skurede mod fjeld-
væggen. Dernæst blev det bagerste stykke af fartøjet
hentet, hvilket kun medtog en times tid, medens flytnin-
gen af forenden paa grund af de mange stansninger varede
næsten 11/2 døgn. Begge stykker overførtes derpaa til
prammen, efterat der i denne tilforn var indladet alle de
løse sager, og den 15 juli kunde jeg endelig have den
glæde at se bugserfartøjet dampe afsted med den fundne
skat, der havde kostet 2’/2 maaneds arbeide og været
gjenstand for saa mange tusend besøgeres opmerksomhed.
Ved ankomsten til Kristiania blev skibet kjørt op
til universitetets tomt og, efterat et skur derover var
bygget, underkastet en højst fornøden istandsættelse, dog
saaledes, at der istedenfor de manglende dele og navnlig
dem, som vare borthuggede ved gravkammerets forstyr-
relse, ikke blev indsat noget nyt.
Den samlede udgift ved det hele foretagende udgjorde
Mr. Chamberlain F. Treschow at Larvik. I therefore
applied to him to hire his pram, but I was indeed very
agreeably surprised and pleased here to be received
with the offer of that gentleman, without any remune- -
ration, to let me have not only his pram but also one
of his steam tugs to transport the vessel whenever
I liked and to whatever place I might desire. This
exceedingly liberal offer I of course gratefully ac-
cepted, and in this way a great difficulty was
removed.
When all the other necessary preparatory measures
were taken, the vessel was by winches, with tolerable
ease, pulled out of the mound an then divided in two,
in the place indicated. The larger or foremost part
of it was then further strengthenened and put on a large
sledge provided with wheels. Eight and later nine horses
were then put before it, but we proceeded but very
slowly and were obliged very frequently to stop on
account of the soft condition of the road, the weakness
of the wheels and the measures I on this account and
for other reasons had found it necessary to adopt. When
we at last reached the most difficult place, above stated,
it began to look somewhat doubtful, whether we should
be able to advance any further. We were then obliged
to unhorse, as the horses had often shown themselves
incapable of pulling together, and as the sudden pulls
that in this way were made, easily might have be-
come dangerous, and later, we hauled the vessel along
by the help of wiuches only. We were however fortun-
ate enough to succeed in making the vessel pass, though
she once came into close contact with the rock and
was scoured at her widest part. We then fetched the hinder
part of the vessel, which however did not take us more
than about an hour, whilst the moving of the forepart,
on account of the many stoppages, had taken almost 36
hours. Both parts were then placed on the pram, where
we had beforehand put all the loose things, and on the
1sth of july I had at last the great joy to see the tug
steaming along with the discovered treasure, that had
cost us the labour of two months and a half, and that all
the time had been the object of the utmost attention to
many thousands of visitors.
When come to Christiania, the vessel was brought
up to the ground of the university and when a shed had
there been erected over her, she was made all right
again, a thing indeed very necessary; but instead of the
parts wanting, and more particularly those taken away,
through the destruction of the sepulchral chamber, we
never put in anything new.
The whole expense of all the work done, came to
