brudstykke føjer, at man da kunde kalde skibet, hvad

stor i forhold dertil. Endelig lod han i 1199 paa kongs-
gaarden i Nidaros reise et skib paa 30 rum, kaldet Og-

I 1206 byggede Erling Steinvæg, Reidar sendemand
Tel-
tet krævede tversover 25 (nu 183/41) alen (11.77 m.) tøj.
Hvert halvrum var beregnet til 8 mand”).

Biskop Nikolaus i Aaslo ejede skibet Skeggen, som

ties were gilded. It had 35 divisions (rm) but was
proportionally large and carried 70 oars!). After the
vessel was launched into the river, he set up the dragon-
heads, and it is in relation to this incident, that the
already cited (p. 27) fragment ofa saga says, that the ship
could now be called a «skeid» or a «dragon» at will.

King Eystein (1103—1122) had a ship built at
Nidaros of size and construction like «the long Serpent» ;
it too had a dragon-head to the fore, and a crook aft,
and both gilded 2),

Eindrid the Young, son of the Earl Erling Skakke,
at the battle of Sekken (1162) had a large warship of
«busse» -build, called the «Draglaun*), and the Earl him-
self (in 1165) caused a «snekke», of 20 divisions (rtm)
and a «Skude» with fifteen to be equipped 4).

In the battle of Nordnes (1181), King Sverre had a
vessel called the «Razor» (Hårknifrin) of 23 divisions
(rtm) and also the Olafssude, wherein 3 men were pla-
ced in each half division. In 1182 he caused the «Maria-
sude» to be built at Nidaros; it was larger than any
other vessel at that time in Norway, had 32 divisions
and was proportionally large. Finally in 1199 he had
built at Nidaros a ship of 30 divisions, called the «Ognar-
brand», which like all the rest had a high free board in
proportion to its number of divisions3).

The chief Vidkunn Erlingsson of Bjarkø owned the
ship «Gullbringen» which had formerly belonged to
Archbishop Eystein; it was of 20 divisions but large in
proportion, and during the cruise about in the fiords
1183, when he was killed, the shields of his followers
were suspended at the posts, and all the coats of mail _
lay in chests under the flooring °).

In 1206 Erling Steinvæg, Reidar the messenger and
Ear! Philippus at Tunsberg built 3 ships «which were much
larger than any previously constructed in Norway.» The
ships had, — what neither before nor since has been known
here, — two tiers of holes (håbora) for the oars between
both the wells; the oars of the upper rank were 20
(now 15) ells long (9.41 m.) and «a man must be one
of the tallest who, standing on the frames (innvidir), could,
with his broad axe, touch the underside of the flooring
(Bilfar)». The tent required in breadth 25 (now 18.75)
ells (11.77 m.) of cloth. Each half division was reckoned
to accommodate 8 men’), :

Bishop Nicholas of Aaslo owned the ship «Skeggen»,
and this ship, with its figure heads and all its furniture 8),
