forstavnen fandtes:

a. omtrent i højde med nysnævnte sager, midtskibs,

af et anker og dets ring;

6. længer ned to svære spirer af fure (pl. IV fig, 13,
14) hvilende i »krykkernes« eller opstandernes tver-
stykke (jfr. pl I fig. 1, 4, II fig. 7 øverst) men med

uvis bestemmelse, maaske varespirer, for deraf at

its sepulchral chamber (PI. III), both as, after having
had their solid parts rightly put together, they now
stand in the shed. The ship as well as the boats and
the roofing of the sepulchral chamber, will subsequently
be described, but first the movables that were found either
within or outside the vessel, shall be dealt with.

Firstly: — there was found in the tumulus å rudely
wrought block of grey sandstone of cylindrical form
2.3 cm. in height, and 4.5 cm. in diameter, on the one
base of which is engraved a figure having a faint resem-
blance to a cross cramponné (fylfot) with six curved
arms. Somewhat deeper lay the thwart of a boat (pl. VII
fig. 5), the fragment of another (pl. VII fig. 4) and a
shovel, all made of oak. Of the last named implement

ten were brought to light, of different sizes, but essen-

several were also found elsewhere, ity “all
tially, of only two shapes, either without a step for the
foot (pl. VII fig. 11, 19), or furnished therewith (pl. VII
fig. 6, 7). and the

The workmanship is rude, latter

be seen on the tapestry have a handle, and that their
blade was shod, probably with iron.

At the forend of the ship, or between the sepulchral
chamber and the stem, were found:
a. at about the same height as the articles just named

in right line therewith, an iron clump which ex-

and amidships about 7 m. from stem and
tended stemwards in a narrower 8 cm. broad bar
which however was so eroded by rust, that it smoul-
dered altogether and only the just named clump.
cohered. These are probably the remains of an
anchor and its ring;
6. at a greater depth two large firwood rough-spars
(pl. IV fig. 13, 14) resting on the crossarms of
the «crutches» or stanchions (conf. pl. I fig. 1. 4,
pl. II fig. 7 uppermost), but the purpose of which
is not known; possibly they might have been reserve-
spars to make a new mast or other round spar in
the event of breakage, although in the place where
they were found, they must have been in the way
when the sail was up. Along the under surface
of the spar that lay to port, was for a good distance
found a thick layer of charcoal, the use of which
can not be accounted for, and therein:
c. a bundle of woollen cloth of yellowish color, though
doubtless originally white, with stripes of red cloth

sewn thereon (cfr, p. 33) the whole of which, pre-
