4 ensformede rembeslag af forgyldt
bronse med underlagt plade, ligeledes
forgyldt og af samme metal ;
2 beslag af samme slags arbeide og metal
som foregaaende, begge væsentlig ens og
yderst merkelige ved sin hos os ene-
staaende figur; thi medens de øvrige for-
an og nedenfor omtalte lignende beslag
øjensynlig i flere dele saa fremmedt for vort land
denne form, saaledes nævnes i vor ældre Gulathings-
været anvendt ogsaa i den yngre jernalder;

ii. 4 strap mountings of like form of gilt
bronze with underplate gilt and of the same
metal ;
kk. 2 mountings of the same kind of metal
and workmanship as the preceding, both
essentially of one character and both ex-
tremely remarkable because of their form
being with us unique; for whereas those
similar mountings, before and subsequently
spoken of, exhibit embellishments merely
ornamental in the customary style of the younger
iron age, and at most (as fig. 4) a somewhat less fantastic
animal; here is to be seen a warrior in his helmet
and with outstretched lance on a galloping horse,
designed with a certain skill and with the repro-
duction of a precise costume, but nevertheless in
many respects so strange to our country and its
then existing customs, that its prototype probably
was brought hither immediately from abroad. No
saddle-tree is seen, nor can it certainly be perceived
whether there are or are not any stirrups, the spear
however is barbed,
seem to bring us into conflict with the fact that
spears of this form, hitherto discovered, belong only
It must however be remar-
a circumstance which might
to the earlier iron age.
ked, that irrespective of the fact, that as all the spear
heads, at the Bayeux tapestry, exhibit that form, so also
in our elder Gulathing’s law, from the middle of the
10" century, both %rökör and krökspjöt are named,
words which can only be understood in relation to
the barbed arrow and spear head, and consequently
they must also have been in use in the later
iron age;
