For at dets ydre

Allerede paa
langs stavnens yderkant (pl. III. fig. 4 a), følger denne
helt op. Paa stavnens indside derimod afsluttes den til-
svarende list allerede langt nedenfor hin; derefter kom-
I. fig.

nok, at i alle fald de sidste for nyttens skyld vare an-

vendte paa vedkommende steder.

secured remarkable steadiness. To present a distinct idea
of the exterior ornamental mouldings, an enlarged draw-
ing of a fragment of the vessel’s aft end on the port
side is given (pl. III. fig. 4) and be it remarked, that the
starboardside is quite similar and that although the corre-
spondent portion of the vessel’s fore end is wholly de-
cayed, there can not be a doubt, that its ornamentation
was identical. But besides that these specimens of moul-
ding exhibit the mode of embellishment, we obtain thence
our sole contribution towards ascertaining of the form
of that free standing portion of the vessel’s stems or the
in our ancient tongue so called brandr. Already from
what has been said (pag. 16) it must seem likely that
the posts of the ship did not curve upwards to a point,

the outer edge of the stem (pl. III. fig. 4 a} is continued
right up; along the inner line however the corresponding
moulding is discontinued a good distance below. A cut-
ting follows in the stem intended probably as a ledge,
on which to spike the planking, and immediately above
a new moulding is begun, which, to judge from its posi-
tion may have run right up. Hence consequently may
be inferred, that the free standing portion of the stem
heretofore named brandr, as indicated by dots in pl. I.
