ship (pl. I. fig. 4. 7. pl. III. fig. 1. 2) however the lower
block extends over 4 frame-timbers while the upper
span 6 beams; the foot of the mast is put down in a
socket in the timber, and the mast itself is grasped in
part by the upper block, and in part by the loose slab
which is laid over its opening and which by means of
its ledge on the under side fits the opening like a lid.

ship also shows very good workmanship, and its boards
both within and without have beaded edges, it is never-
theless far from being able to compete with the other
vessel, which, over and above its other and higher qua-
lities, has greater sharpness of build anda finer sheer. This
will best be seen from pl. I. fig. 2. 3, wherewith by means
of the transverse sections presented as taken at various
points we may obtain a clear idea of the vessel’s form
and figure in their entirety. Seen from above (pl. 1. fig. 7)
it stands by its proportions of length and breadth, much
in advance of the Nordland boat, and among all our pre-
sent small boats, has, in that respect, its parallel only
in the boats generally used in Trysil, — these meanwhile
exhibiting many points in difference and that point espe-
cially, that they are keelless, and besides, that like the
