hver side af skibet, som (pl. I. fig. 4) ere fæstede til det
7de og 8de bord ovenfra mellem roret og agterste spant,
vel have tjent til støtte for de derværende tiljer. For-
resten ere alle skibets tiljer forsirede med indridsede cirk-
ler, enten koncentriske eller skjærende hverandre paa for-
skjellig maade (jfr. pl. VI. fig. 12—14).
Som hørende med til skibets indre, maa, foruden det
allerede nys ovenfor omtalte vertikale tverbræt (höfdafjöl)
bagenfor roret (pl. I. fig. 4), endnu nævnes den lille vinkel-
formede klamp paa hver side tæt forenfor roret, men hvis
bestemmelse ikke skjønnes, samt de trende klamper, lige-
ledes paa hver side og meget lige nutidens, som sees
efter hverandre lidt forenfor den nysomtalte og maa have
tjent til fæste for sejlets skjøder og braser.
Skibet var paa hver side fra lidt fremmenfor det
forreste aarehul indtil lidt agtenfor det bagerste udven-
dig behængt med 32 lige store, cirkelrunde skjolde,
eller rettere sagt, saaledes havde tilstanden været fra
først af. Men dels vare flere skjolde forsvundne med
det borthuggede mellemstykke af skibets bagbordside,
dels vare de øvrige bøjede indover med rælingen (jfr.
s. 6), saa at kun det nederste segment af hvert skjold
havde sin oprindelige stilling, medens den øvrige del var
bøjet to gange, først næsten horisontalt, med.bulen om-
trent midt paa, og dernæst i skraa retning nedover kan-
ten af rælingen. Hvert skjold (pl. VIII. fig. 7) var 94 cm.
i tvermaal og sammensat af tynde, mod periferien tilspid-
sede brætter, lagte kant i kant og forbundne paa for-
siden tildels ved den nysnævnte jernbule og paa bag-
siden ved en helt over gaaende tverstok (jfr. s. 34),
der tillige under bulen har tjent som haandtag. Des-
uden viser der sig langs periferien fine huller for stif-
ter, udentvil til fæstelse af en rundtom gaaende metal-
spange, som har ydet hele pladen stor støtte, men hvoraf
der ej fandtes mindste spor. Træsorten er efter den
undersøgelse, som hr. professor A. Blytt velvillig har fore-
taget, ikke lind, men gran, og bulen fremviser ved ind-
knibningen ovenfor randen bestemt hen til den yngre
jernalders sedvanlige typ. Skjoldene vare lagt over hin-
anden paa den foran (s. 34) omtalte maade, idet man
havde begyndt agtenfra, saaledes at hvert skjold med
kanten af sin periferi stødte imod eller gik lidt op paa
bulen af det bagenfor liggende samt derhos skjulte det

West- and Nordland boats; and it is also noticeable that
the two clamps, one on each side of the ship (pl. I. fig. 4),
which are fixed to the 7th and 8th planks downwards,
between rhe rudder and the furthest aft frame-timber,
have served as supports for the flooring boards. For
the rest all these boards have their surface ornamented
by circles scored thereon, either concentric or in various
ways intersecting each other (conf. pl. VI. fig. 12—14).
Besides the beforenamed upright screen (hdféafjol)
aft of the rudder (pl. I. fig. 4), there, in relation to the
vessel’s interior, must be named the small angular clamp
on each side, to the fore of the rudder, the intention of
of which however is not known; as well as the three
clamps, following each other in a forward direction, also
found on the ship’s sides, and closely resembling those
in use to this day. These must have served to fasten
the sheet and braces of the vessel.
From a short distance beyond the foremost oar-port,
up to a little behind that furthest sternward, the ship
was hung, externally, with 32 shields of like size, or to
speak more accurately, such had, in the first instance,
been its equipment. Some of these, however, had dis-
appeared with that portion of the ship’s portside where
the inroad took place. Of those remaining, some had
been bent up inwards with the gunwale (cfr. pag. 6), so
that only the inferior segment of each shield held its
original position; and the residue had been bent in two
ways, — either nearly horizontally, close to the central
boss, or askance over the edge of the gunwale. Each
shield (pl. VIII. fig. 7) was 94 cm. in diameter, and the
discs were formed of thin boards, laid vertically edge to
edge, chamfered towards the circumference, and fastened
together, on the obverse, partly by the semispherical
boss just named, and on the reverse, by a cross-piece
(cfr. pag. 34) that part of which immediately under the
boss did duty as a handle. In addition, fine holes, as
for the reception of points, are traceable around the cir-
cumference, and these were, indubitably used, for fasten-
ing a metallic rim that encircled and supported the
entire disc of the weapon, but of which no trace
remained. After an investigation, kindly undertaken
by Professor A. Blytt, touching the kind of wood
used, it is found not to be linden, but white pine; and
the central boss indicates, by the pinching above its
edge, its connexion with the ordinary types of the later
iron age. The suspended shields overlapped each other
in the way described (cfr. pag. 34) i. e. the ranging
having been begun from aft, each subsequent shield was
so placed that its outer edge touched the boss of that
last preceding; thereby covering the corresponding oar
