omhandlede gravkammer sikkert bevis for, at laftning
gammel tid.
1 skibet træffes ogsaa her tverstykker (pl. IV. fig. 16, 17)
Ogsaa rorene (pl. V.
fig.
V. fig. 10),
hvorhos aarerne havde væsentlig samme form (jfr. på. V.
fig.

we except the ledge or groove in the sills, scarcely any-
thing can be found either for or against, to decide the
question, whether at that period, the high development of
vertical wood structure, seen in our old churches, the so cal-
led «Stavkirker», was or was not known. But that the hori-
zontal construction of a log-house, called «laftbygning»
was well known, the present instance proves conclusively.
So much might almost in and of itself be deemed probable;
but still further, this construction is mentioned in a Saga’),
as having been applied in Thorolf Kveldulfsson’s house

until after the lapse of several centuries from the date
of the event recorded, can hardly he held altogether
trustworthy ; but at all events, we have in the sepulchral
chamber here treated of, the first authentic evidence that
the style named, «laftbygning», was in use at so early
a period.
Relatively then to the boats discovered, they may
be deemed more noteworthy than even the vessel itself,
for so much as they are the only specimens known, of
that kind of craft, of so h’sh antiquity. Their number,
as already stated (conf. pag. 38 Æ) is three, — but they
were broken up into so many fragments, that recon-
struction aided by
those relics, we can form a tolerably clear idea of the
proved impossible. | Nevertheless,
boats’ original form and character, and hereby, as formerly
remarked (pag. 24), will that idea be in some instances
Like the
ship, these boats are oak-built, unpainted, very sharp at
each end, and they consist of a keel (pl. V. fig. 8, 12)

with nails clinched, and attached to the framing by either
cords or trenails. A bulkhead too is found here as in
the ship (pl. IV. fig. 16, 17) at each end, that aft being
provided with holes for the tiller lines. The rudders (pl. V.
fig. 2—4) are also, in all material points, the same in shape
and equipment as that of the vessel; but are without the
iron ring at the top, and only (pl. V. fig 2) one of them, un-
questionably that belonging to the largest boat, had, when
unearthed, an iron cramp at its heel, which, however, has
since smouldered away. Finally, here also the helmsman has
had opportunity to support himself against a screen (pl. V.
fig. 10) The oars, too, are in form (pl. V. fig. 1) like those
of the ship. Of the largest and smallest boats, the keels
are in perfect preservation and hold the respective lengths
